Kapilash Temple- Homage of Lord Chandrasekhar

The Temple at Kapilash known as the Chandrashekhar Temple is situated in the north eastern part of Dhenkanal town, Orissa at a distance of 26 km from the district headquarter. The main castle of the temple is 60 feet tall. One can land at the temple in two ways, one is by climbing 1352 steps and the other is through Barabanki or travelling by the twisting way. The temple is surrounded on all sides by the Eastern Ghats. Kapilash is quite scenic.

Architecture of Kapilash Temple

The temple for Sri Chandrasekhar is set up by King Narasinghdeva of Ganga Dynasty in 1246 CE. There are two Kundas in the left and right side of the temple. In the left side the Payamrta Kunda and in the right side the Marichi Kunda exists. The temple has a wooden Jagamohana. Ganesh, Kartikeya, Gangadevi etc. are found in the temple. Patita pavana Jagannath is placed in the temple as the Parsa Deva. Lord Vishwanath temple is also situated in Kapilash. According to some learned person this temple is older than the Chandrasekhar temple; hence it is known as Budha Linga.

Famous Festivals of Kapilash Temple

The homestead of Shiva comes alive during the most important festival of the region, Shivratri. Thousands of pilgrims cluster here from various parts of the state. Thousands of devotees come here during Mondays of in the month of Shraban, known as Bolbam Yatra. Devotees carry the water of the Mahanadi in earthen vessels on their shoulders. They reach barefoot to the hilltop before pouring the water on the Shivlinga

Saptasajya: It is another picturesque destination, 11 km from Dhenkanal. Visit the temples of Saptarshi and Raghunath there. Legend says it is that place where the Pandavas had taken shelter in hiding.

Joranda: You can also go on an excursion to Joranda, now growing in popularity among tourists. Followers of the Mahima cult visit Joranda as pilgrimage. Joranda is also famous for handicrafts.
